I build virtual prototypes on the computer of objects that will be built on the shop floor. Full-scale layouts are generated from my 3D models as well as parts drawings and fabrication drawing. 3D drawings on the shop floor make easier for the crew to clearly understand what they are building. Dimensioning the 3d model is a great way of minimizing errors. The best of both worlds is a 3D model and an orthographic projection on the same sheet of drafting.
The 3D model clarifies details that are not clear on the original design drawings. Whether the project is scenery for the theatre or architectural millwork building experience is crucial for the technical designer to be able to draw accurate plans.
A good SITE SURVEY is an important component of any project. You can hire me to do a site survey for your event whether it is a Corporate Meeting, Theatrical Production, Architecture of you just want to build a barn. My experience designing and building makes me go right to the loading door to know what you can get into the space. I can draft site plans in many formats: AutoCAD, VectorWorks, SketchUp or Rhino. Sometimes you get plans from a venue in AutoCAD and you are working in VectorWorks: I can convert the files for you. And I you get a VectorWorks File and need it converted to AutoCAD I can do that as well.

SketchUp is my favorite drawing program because it gets rid of the problem with perspective. Many design students, including me when I was a student, can’t master perspective. Sketchup, in my opinion, is the drafting board for Set Design 101. Teaching Stage Carpentry at Purchase College inspired me to create an interactive iBook that takes you through the process of drawing and lighting a complete set with all the construction detail in the model.
Setting up scenes for quick navigation is great for doing live demonstrations in a meeting or sending a mp4 animation to a client for review.
Rhino is the latest Software I added to my repertoire of CAD programs. I purchased it bundle with RhinoCam. Rhino absolutely amazing. My first Rhino project was to create a 3D model of a stainless steel spiral staircase from an Architects 2d drawing. I could not believe how fast I was about to draw a quick rough to send to the client. Ironically, the subjective benefit of Rhino is that it helped me get a deeper understanding of AutoCAD. The VRay plugin for Rhino made the stainless steel in the spiral staircase look awesome.
The Rhino, RhinoCam, and Rhino VRay are without a doubt a software triumvirate.
AutoCAD is my anchor program that I use to scale drawings such as PDFs, Illustrator, or other CAD programs. My experience with using AutoCAD is both extensive and intensive because I have done so many projects in AutoCAD. I do most of my preliminary work in AutoCAD and use it to produce many of my 2D drawings sets. The import and export functions in AutoCAD make working with other CAD programs possible. AutoCAD is the glue that ties together the SketchUp files, VectorWorks files, Rhino files, PDF files, and Illustrator files that I get from project managers.
VectorWorks is one of the first CAD programs I used because of its user-friendly format. It’s great for creating 3D designs, Presentations, and drafting. As a technical designer, I get a lot of projects that were designed in VectorWorks. I prefer to start my work with the original VectorWorks file, so I can see the context of the design. Many times I get a PDF file and a DWG file that were exported from Vectorworks: the DWG file doesn’t look at all like the PDF. VectorWorks also exports curves as splines instead of polylines. I own VectorWorks Designer, which includes Spotlight, Architecture, and Landscape. Ironically, my favorite Vectorworks project was using Landscape. I designed an extensive excavation plan for my barn, located on a hill behind my house at an elevation 35 ft above the house, which needed a 250 ft road. Vectorworks was my primary CAD program for many years.
Shop and Fabrication drawings are my specialty. Fine Woodworking is my passion and so is the attention to detail that defines my work. My drawing skills can build 3D models of most things you can imagine. My drawings are– what you see– is what you get. If the parts fit correctly in the model, they fit correctly in fabrication. I create CNC and waterjet files from 2D drawing when they fairly straightforward, but complex objects must fit, so I create CNC files by extracting them from the model. I have an excellent track of making all the pieces of the puzzle fit.
